Forthcoming Events
Watch out for a new series of weekly meetings at St. Catherine's Church in September and October (see Andrew's article below). We'll look in lively way at what it is Christians believe. We hope to begin on Wednesday 10 September and continue over the next five weeks.
We hope to meet again on Wednesday, 15 October for a Praise Service that could link the themes of the previous six weeks together. If you are interested let us know, either by signing the Mailing List - click here, or by emailing me.
Every blessing,
Revd Vince Fenton.
For some time now we've been talking about running a course at St Catherine's to help people explore the Christian faith in a relaxed way as part of a small group. Vince has invited Christine Hodgson and myself to lead just such a course this autumn, starting in September.
One of the various courses available was developed in a northern parish rather like our own, by Steve Croft, the former warden of Crammer Hall, where Vince and I both trained. Both of us have used this material in the past and have found it very well thought out. The name of the wider course, 'Emmaus - the way of faith', refers to that incident at the end of the gospel where two of the disciples are wandering back to their homes in Emmaus, some distance from Jerusalem, in deep shock after Jesus' death two days earlier. A stranger approaches them on the road, asking them why they are so sad. Hearing their reply, he begins to open up the Jewish scriptures to them, helping them to understand how the ancient prophecies about Jesus had actually come true. Only after accepting their invitation to stay for a meal, and as he blesses their bread in their presence, do they suddenly realise that this is Jesus, resurrected from the dead, and fully alive alongside them. They are so overjoyed that they immediately race off to Jerusalem to share their excitement with the other disciples. Having met the risen Jesus for themselves, their lives are never the same again! The aim of this little course is to help us catch something of their excitement. It gives us a chance perhaps to explore some of the things we've never been able to look at before, and to ask those questions we've never asked. The course material is light, yet thought-provoking, and designed never to put anyone under pressure to speak if they don't feel like it. It's an ideal opportunity for people either exploring the Christian faith for the first time or for those who've been church-goers for years but want a short 'refresher' course.
We'll be in the side aisle at St Catherine's, and will start on Wednesday, 10th September, with refreshments from 7.15pm. And if folk are worried about time, we'll make sure you'll be able to get away by nine! Anybody is welcome to come along. If you might be interested, please just speak to Christine or myself, and we'll try to answer any questions you might have about it. We're really looking forward to this and hope that you might consider being part of it.
